IMO this is not so. The role is not to empathize but to create an issue-less interaction.
Is not thru empathy (which is valuable, indeed) but thru mastering the appropriate skill set that the designer has to come out with an usable UX, before the first line of code is written.
Not coming out with *any* UI and then make it acceptable after several rounds of user testing, but instead coming out with a really good UI in the first place, and then to make it excellent after the user testing rounds.
It’s what I call “usable by design”.
Empathizing with the team mates is more than OK, but the outcome, the UI, should not depent on it.
