Most of the people tested to obtain 7 were into intellectual occupation that specifically trained memory and memory span is very much sensitive to training. A more appropriate number would be 4 or 5. Interestingly 4 is the higher number we can percieve without having to count. Unfortunately 7 was so widespread by the time the mistake was known that it could never be corrected.
